Naperville Illinois Transportation

There are two METRA commuter rail stations that service Naperville with express trains to the downtown Chicago area. If you are traveling during morning and evening rush hours, there is Express service available to get you where you need to go quickly. The Express trains travel from the Route 59 station to Union Station in 45 minutes and from the Downtown Naperville station in 35 minutes or less.

You can also take the public bus system (PACE) throughout the Chicago suburbs. If you need a bus during rush hour, PACE provides service from the Naperville and Lisle train stations as well as many other areas of the city. And getting back to the I-88 corridor from the Naperville METRA station is easy with the reverse commuter route.

If you need to use the Park-n-Ride, there are three free parking locations that will take you on express buses to the Route 59 train station. Whether you're going to work or you're out for a leisurely day of shopping and fun, there are plenty of bus routes to take you to just about anywhere in the Chicago suburbs.

History of Naperville Illinois

Joseph Naper and his family fell in love with the beauty of the DuPage River, and, in 1831, became some of the first residents to settle here. The area was called Naper's Settlement for many years. In 1857, Naper's Settlement was incorporated as the Village of Naperville.

In the early years, Naperville was at the crossroads of two stage coach lines. By 1864, the railroad brought more growth to the area. The community continued to grow, and, in 1890, it was incorporated as the City of Naperville.

By the mid-1950's, Chicago residents began looking for a quieter lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Naperville underwent significant growth as more workers moved away from Chicago into the suburbs. Naperville soon became the site of research and development industries such as Bell Labs, Tellabs, and Lucent, just to name a few.

In 1981, the Riverwalk was built to commemorate Naperville's 150 years of history and growth. The Riverwalk is a four mile walkway that runs along both banks of the DuPage River in the downtown area of the city. It is a year-round attraction for residents and tourists and is considered by many to be Naperville's "Crown Jewel.
