History of Naperville Illinois
Joseph Naper and his family fell in love with the
beauty of the DuPage River, and, in 1831, became some of
the first residents to settle here. The area was called
Naper's Settlement for many years. In 1857, Naper's
Settlement was incorporated as the Village of
Naperville. In the early years, Naperville was at the crossroads
of two stage coach lines. By 1864, the railroad brought
more growth to the area. The community continued to
grow, and, in 1890, it was incorporated as the City of
Naperville.
By the mid-1950's, Chicago residents began looking
for a quieter lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle
of the big city. Naperville underwent significant growth
as more workers moved away from Chicago into the
suburbs. Naperville soon became the site of research and
development industries such as Bell Labs, Tellabs, and
Lucent, just to name a few.
In 1981, the Riverwalk was built to commemorate
Naperville's 150 years of history and growth. The
Riverwalk is a four mile walkway that runs along both
banks of the DuPage River in the downtown area of the
city. It is a year-round attraction for residents and
tourists and is considered by many to be Naperville's "Crown
Jewel.”
